Very interesting, I'm glad you want to share your experience with us.
You can find implementation examples in C, C++ and F77 in
utils/test_strext_socket*; I'm attaching a few examples of the usage of
such tools (which I'll post also in the examples on the website as soon
as I'm back to Milano).
